OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS

clipart of white figure skate   CANSKATE

CanSkate is a basic learn-to-skate program teaching the fundamentals of skating. For Canskate lessons, the club ensures that there are at least two professional coaches on the ice for all sessions. These coaches rotate from group to group so that each group receives a lesson each day. The coaches are assisted by Program Assistants who are figure skaters from the club who have been trained by the coaches under Skate Canada guidelines and we maintain a ratio of one coach or program assistant for each 10 skaters on the ice. Helmets are mandatory for this program.

New skaters are assigned to a Canskate level according to their skating experience and age. During the first few sessions, coaches observe the skaters and may move some to other groups that are more appropriate to their ability. They will also be a reassessment of skaters periodically throughout the season moving those who have progressed to the next group. CanSkate is the feeder program to the Starskate and Canpower programs that develop figure skating and hockey skills respectively.

Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.

This is the first level of Starskate. As a general rule, skaters who have passed CanSkate Level 4 or are otherwise recommended by a coach may move up to Special Juniors. Lessons are held in a group format, with some independent skating required. The Club provides the coach for the group lesson portion which includes two 50 minute group lessons per week. For the independent work portion, skaters may hire a coach for private lessons. Since Skate Canada does not permit coaches to solicit skaters, it is important for parents to ask coaches if they think their child is ready for individual coaching.
