CANSKATECanSkate is a national certified program offered only through sanctioned SkateCanada clubs. It is a basic 6-level, learn-to-skate program that serves as an excellent introduction to all ice sports including figure skating and hockey. New skaters are assigned to a CanSkate level according to their skating experience and age. During the first few sessions, coaches observe the skaters and may move some to other groups that are more appropriate to their ability. Skaters progress through the 6 badge format on an individual basis. Progression is monitored and accessed continuously. CanSkate is the feeder program to the Starskate and Canpower programs that develop figure skating and hockey skills respectively. Helmets are mandatory for this program. See helmet policy for more information. StarSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system. As a general rule, skaters who have passed CanSkate Level 4 or are otherwise recommended by a coach may move up to Juniors. Lessons are held in a group format, with some independent skating required. The Club provides the coach for the group lesson portion which includes two 50 minute group lessons per week. For the independent work portion, skaters may hire a coach for private lessons. Since Skate Canada does not permit coaches to solicit skaters, it is important for parents to ask coaches if they think their child is ready for individual coaching. Helmets are mandatory for skaters up to and including CanSkate Level 5. See helmet policy for more information. Intermediate (Star 1 to 3)Juniors who are ready to skate independently and who are recommended by a coach, skate at the Intermediate level. Generally, skaters are coached privately at this level (or when opportunity warrants semi-privately). Skaters hire their own coach for lessons. Senior (Star 4+)Skaters who are already skating in the StarSkate program and who have passed the complete Star 3 tests are eligible to skate at the Senior level. Generally, skaters are coached privately at this level. Skaters hire their own coach for lessons. Check out our coaches .
