Welcome to the West Carleton Skating Club

StarSkate

Overview

StarSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating.

Unique in Canada, this program teaches figure skating skills in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.

Junior Starskate

This is an introduction into StarSkate. Generally, skaters who have passed CanSkate Level 4 or are otherwise recommended by a coach, may move up to Junior Starskate. Lessons are held in a group format, with some independent skating required. The Club provides coaches for the Junior Starskate group lessons.  Helmets are mandatory for skaters up to and including CanSkate Level 5. Please review the helmet policy (in accordance with Skate Canada) for more information.

Intermediate Starskate (Star 1 – 3)

This level is for skaters who are already skating in the Starskate program and who are recommended by a coach to move into Intermediate Starskate. Skaters at this level are working on Star 1 – 3. Skaters are coached privately, semi-private or in small group lessons. Skaters will be responsible for hiring their own coach for lessons.

Senior Starskate (Star 4 +)

Skaters who have been skating in the StarSkate program and who have passed all Star 3 tests are eligible to skate at this level. Skaters are coached privately, semi-private or in small group lessons at this level. Skaters will be responsible for hiring their own coach for lessons.

Open Starskate sessions (Star 3+)

Skaters who have been skating in the StarSkate program and who have passed all Star 2 tests are eligible to skate in the Open sessions. Skaters are coached privately, semi-private or in small group lessons at this level. Skaters will be responsible for hiring their own coach for lessons. Skaters in Star 1 or 2 wishing to skate in the Open session will be considered by coaching and administration on a per request basis.

Hiring a Private Coach

For those skaters in Intermediate Starskate level and above, it is highly recommended that you contact one of our professional coaches to arrange private, semi-private or small group lessons (3 – 4 skaters). When contacting a coach, be sure to inquire about their rate, experience and make arrangements with them for the number of lessons (and in what format – private/semi private or small group) you wish your skater to have per week. The benefit to having group lessons is if your skater is in a group of 3, the costs is split between each skater in the group and the lesson longer than a private lesson. Skate Canada does not permit coaches to solicit skaters, so it is important for parents to approach the coach.
